Our Range of Special Effects & Embellishments

Special effects and embellishments will really help your printing stand out from the crowd! Explore our range of options below:

Spot UV

Spot UV is a flat (2D) gloss effect which is applied to a particular element or section of your design (it is never applied to the whole surface). After being applied, the UV effect is exposed to Ultra Violet light which bonds and dries the coating flat.

Spot UV is a fantastic way to add contrast, and to highlight certain elements in a design. It also looks fantastic as a patterned background. As Spot UV is a flat finish, it can bleed right to the edge of your design. We always offer Spot UV on top of a laminated surface and the effect offers the best contrast when applied in conjunction with a rich dark background in your design.

Scodix

Scodix (also known as Raised Spot Gloss) is another gloss effect. Like Spot UV, the effect is applied to a particular part or section of your design. However, unlike Spot UV, Scodix produces a raised (3D) effect. With a raised super glossy appearance, Scodix is a stunning way to highlight certain elements in a design. The effect works best when applied on top of velvet laminate for maximum contrast.

Due to the nature of it’s raised finish, Scodix can ‘fill in’ on some very fine lines and serif fonts. We recommend the effect is applied thicker Sans-serif fonts and elements for best results. Again, due to the nature of it’s raised finish, the effect cannot bleed off the edge of a design, or be placed over a fold or score line.

Raised Metal

Raised Metal is another spot effect. It utilises a similar process to Scodix, however after the effect is applied, it is coated in either Silver, Gold, Rose Gold or Holographic metal foil. It is a raised (3D) effect, and works best when applied on top of a velvet laminate.

For best results, and to ensure the most striking finish we recommend the effect be used sparingly and to selected elements in your design. Just like Scodix, this finish can ‘fill in’ on very fine lines and serif fonts. We recommend the finish should only be applied to thicker Sans-serif fonts and elements for best results. Again, like Scodix, due to it’s raised nature, the effect cannot bleed off the edge of a design, or be placed over a fold or score line.
